Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ season 3’s trailer is a one-minute teaser that shows off the show’s beloved characters, including Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck) in bed with Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), the Starship Enterprise’s crew in a holodeck murder mystery and a 1950s sci-spoof, as well as Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley) toasting Lt. Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn). The USS Enterprise even goes analog for mysterious reasons. Marie is infected with Gorn eggs in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2’s finale, with Nurse Chapel tasked with the desperate mission to find a way to save Batel. However, it’s possible Chapel fails and Batel dies, just like Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak) did in Strange New Worlds season 1. The brief and limited glimpses of Captain Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3’s trailer don’t betray the fate of Captain Batel either way. Pike only has a few moments in the new footage, and most of it has Pike commanding the USS Enterprise or firing a phaser. There is a brief shot of Pike wearing 1970s-style garb in Strange New Worlds season 3’s holodeck murder mystery episode directed by Jonathan Frakes, but nothing of Pike’s behavior hints at what became of Captain Batel or how he feels about it.

Lieutenant Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte) also doesn’t show his face in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3’s trailer, but, like Captain Batel, Sam will at least be in Strange New Worlds season 3’s premiere. Sam was one of the USS Enterprise crew abducted by the Gorn in Strange New Worlds season 2’s finale. However, it’s possible that Sam is seen firing a phaser rifle inside the Gorn’s ship in a quick moment in Strange New Worlds season 3’s trailer.

It’s unclear how much Lt. Sam Kirk will appear in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 – especially since it seems there will be plenty of Lt. James T. Kirk in the new episodes – but, unlike Captain Batel, Sam is safe from an untimely death. Canonically, Sam Kirk doesn’t die until Star Trek: The Original Series season 1, episode 29, “Operation — Annihilate!” Not appearing in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3’s trailer doesn’t mean Sam Kirk or Captain Batel will die, but it’s still a more ominous harbinger for Batel.
