Having completed two full weeks in theaters worldwide, A Working Man is yet to pass a meaningful box office milestone, either domestically or worldwide. The action movie grossed about as much as The Beekeeper did in its opening weekend. But it has since struggled to keep up. At the same stage in its run, The Beekeeper was pacing well ahead of it. That being said, A Working Man is approaching the coveted $100 million mark at the global box office, but it remains to be seen if it has enough gas left in the tank to get it there.
With $33 million domestically and another $45 million from overseas markets, A Working Man has grossed a cumulative total of $79 million worldwide. Starring Jason Statham and directed by David Ayer, the movie should be in the clear shortly, once it passes the $80 million mark. It was produced on a reported budget of $40 million, and, going by the rule of thumb, would need to gross twice this amount to become theatrically profitable. The Beekeeper also cost $40 million, but it made over $60 million domestically and concluded its global run with a little more than $160 million.
It was a surprise hit, even though Statham’s track record, especially in the post-pandemic era, has been more solid than others’. He also headlined Guy Ritchie‘s Wrath of Man past the $100 million mark, and starred in Meg 2: The Trench, which grossed nearly $400 million worldwide. Statham did, however, have a couple of duds — Ritchie’s Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, and Expend4bles. Both those movies concluded their runs with around $50 million worldwide. During the course of its run, A Working Man has overtaken past Statham movies such as Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Homefront, The Transporter, and Parker.
‘A Working Man’ Balanced Mixed Reviews with Positive Audience Reception
The movie opened to mixed reviews, and appears to have settled at a “rotten” 51% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. It has, however, earned an 87% audience score on the platform. In his review, Collider’s Nate Richard described the movie as “the kind of throwback to the action movies of the late-80s and early-90s that will have both your inner-action buff and your Dad hooting and hollering in the theater.” Statham is set to return for a sequel to The Beekeeper, but Ayer won’t be back.
