The beloved cozy game’s next free update, Wonderland Whimsy, will be themed around the magical antics of Alice in Wonderland, which will introduce two new characters from the Disney title into players’ Valleys. But it now looks like the Cheshire Cat will take some real-world time, and fans aren’t thrilled about this decision.

Fans voice off about the potentially time-specific release of the Cheshire Cat in a Reddit thread started by MistakePlus discussing the update reveal. It wasn’t specifically spelled out, but the phrasing of the presenter in the Developer Update hints at a time-gated release of the Cat, with the host Courtney stating that the Cheshire Cat’s integration into the Valley would take place “over the next few weeks.”

Dreamlight Valley releases a new free update every few months, bringing more and more of its characters into the game. For instance, the Tales from Agrabah update brought Aladdin, Jasmine, and the Magic Carpet into the title. Most of the time, these updates only require players to complete the characters’ quests in the respective Realms, then build their homes in the Valley to get the character to move in as a permanent resident.

Disney Dreamlight Valley has revealed the long-awaited major Spring update, Wonderland Whimsy, including new characters, items, and a star path.

However, it seems like the Cheshire Cat’s residency will be more hard-earned than that. According to the Developers Update, the Cheshire Cat’s arrival in the Valley will be accompanied by chaos and shenanigans. Getting the magical cat as a Valley resident will only be achieved once the Cat’s riddles are solved, over the course of several real-world weeks.

Fans Aren’t Thrilled About This Decision

If the Cheshire Cat really is time-gated, this won’t be the first time that developer Gameloft has made a villager’s arrival span several days. The popular blue alien Stitch, who was added to the game in December 2022, also requires the completion of a time-gated quest over 10 real days.

The decision to potentially introduce the Cheshire Cat in the same way isn’t sitting well with some fans. “I really hope it doesn’t take that long to get Cheshire Cat,” says KilliganKallie. Besides needing more of a time commitment, the Cheshire Cat’s late arrival might also mean that the popular new addition of the Uncrafting Station will take some time to get, since it’s linked to the Cheshire Cat’s Friendship quests.

If the Cheshire Cat will take some time to get, it will hopefully follow the same time frame as Stitch and only take about a week and a half and not a “couple of weeks” as the Developer Update to Disney Dreamlight Valley makes it seem. All will be revealed once the Wonderland Whimsy drops on April 23 as a free update.
