Having already become one of the 100 highest-grossing horror movies in domestic box office history, Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners is climbing up another list. It’s now among the top 15 highest-grossing vampire movies ever made, having overtaken every film in the Underworld franchise. More impressively, it’s set to drive a stake through the heart of none other than Morbius. Sinners achieved this feat in less than a week of release. The movie exceeded projections in its box office debut, and is expected to retain its crown in its sophomore frame. Widely hailed as a much-needed win for original, big-screen filmmaking, Sinners is the success story of the year so far.
With $64 million domestically and another $15 million from overseas markets, Sinners is passing the $80 million mark at the worldwide box office as we speak. It’s set to break into the list of the 80 highest-grossing horror movies of all time when it overtakes The Purge, The Invisible Man, and the Friday the 13th remake today. Sinners has a strong chance of overtaking last year’s breakout horror hit, Longlegs, by Friday. The movie will likely pass the coveted $100 million milestone this weekend.
Meanwhile, over on the highest-grossing vampire movies list, Sinners will likely overtake Morbius by Friday as well. It has already overtaken The Lost Boys, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and 30 Days of Night. Sinners has out-grossed each of the five films in the Kate Beckinsale-led Underworld series, and will surpass the lifetime domestic totals of every Blade movie by tomorrow. It has also already generated around three times what From Dusk Till Dawn — a major inspiration — made in 1996. No prizes for guessing what the highest-grossing vampire movies in history are. The Twilight Saga occupies all the top five spots on the list.
‘Sinners’ Has Earned Some of the Best Reviews of Coogler’s Acclaimed Career
Starring Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, Sinners also features Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Omar Miller, and Jack O’Connell in supporting roles. Produced on a reported budget of over $90 million, the movie opened to near-unanimous praise, and holds a “certified fresh” 98% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, in addition to a “verified hot” 97% audience score, and a rare (for a horror movie) A grade according to CinemaScore. In her review, Collider’s Emma Kiely described Sinners as “an electric film sparkling with energy and passion,” and wrote that “Coogler takes everything he has honed over the past 10 years and crafts a spectacle hoisted up by exceptional visual storytelling.” You can watch the movie in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
