Physical objects are the core behind today’s Connections puzzle, giving you a strong mental image of certain terms. However, I found that the abundance of straightforward terms today made it almost harder to find the right categories for every available phrase. This unexpected challenge can make it hard to reach the right answers without the right clues to guide you.
It’s almost too easy to find patterns in today’s puzzle, making it more similar to NYT’s Letter Boxed game structure at times. That being said, I found that the simplicity of the puzzle was designed to trick you, as it is easy to assume some concepts are meant to work together. You only have four chances to make a mistake, so you can’t rely too much on your first guesses.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
May 2 #691
Once I slowed down during today’s puzzle, I was able to solve it by thinking about how certain words looked rather than what they did. If there were to be a theme for today’s puzzle, it would be reliability, emphasizing how rigid some phrases are in what they represent. For example, the word SUPPORT refers to the physical object used to hold up large structures, creating an image of something visually consistent.
Those looking for ideas about the categories for today’s puzzle should try to follow these helpful hints:
- One category is about things related to types of physical sculptures.
- One category is about things related to physical structures used to hold up larger constructions.
- One category is about things related to food you might find at a local BBQ.
- One category is about things related to prefixes before the alternate term for the word “throat.”

BUST |
RELIEF |
STATUE |
TORSO |
While I have no expertise in architecture, I trusted my instincts to imagine that RELIEF was referring to a physical structure rather than the term synonymous with relaxing. This did lead to some confusion, as I originally thought that a RELIEF was similar to SUPPORT or BRACE. However, upon some reflection, I realized that STATUE and BUST were both artistic works that fit well with RELIEF and TORSO to describe the right category.

BRACE |
POST |
PROP |
SUPPORT |
Although I did put BRACE and SUPPORT together when I began today’s puzzle, it took me a lot longer to find the other terms in this group. I did not realize POST was meant to reflect a supportive structure rather than a signpost or some other object. When I noticed that PROP could mean to prop up something, I understood the theme of this category and the right terms to complete it.

WING |
This was likely the easiest part of the puzzle for me, as I already imagined DOG to refer to hot dogs and LINK as a word for sausage links. In short order, I put together RIB and WING for two of my favorite foods to see at any restaurant, let alone a BBQ event. To get both pairs of words together, I simply associated all four into “food-related” terms to come to the right answer.

GOOSE |
TURTLE |
This was the hardest part of the puzzle for me, as the words BOTTLE and BREAK were outliers for most of my time spent finding other solutions. When I reached the puzzle’s end, I put GOOSE and TURTLE together without DOG, despite how that seemed to be a natural pairing. By doing this, I put the last words left into the same group, and using process of elimination, was able to come to the right conclusion.
