The patterns in today’s Connections puzzle are tougher to find than you may expect, with four different categories that are difficult to predict from the words you’re given. I struggled with the puzzle today, as many of the topics it created were about far less defined descriptions behind various phrases. Without some clues, you may make plenty of mistakes without reaching the right answers to the puzzle.

You only have four chances to make a mistake in today’s Connections puzzle, just one fewer than your daily NYT Wordle puzzle. This limited number of errors makes it even more important to take your time and search for words being used in the puzzle. You need to look at how words are used, the different contexts you hear them, and sometimes, even what other words are hidden within them.

Today’s Connections Category Hints

One of the ways I was able to solve today’s puzzle was recognizing its core theme – comparative phrases. Every word in the puzzle for today is something that describes either a broader concept or has parts within it that can be compared to something else. For example, the word HUSH is used to compare to the simpler topic of being quiet, even though it is used as a commanding verb purely through its definition.

If you’re struggling to find today’s categories like I was, follow these helpful hints to give you a head start:

  • One category is about things that compare to the concept of being quiet.
  • One category is about things that are used to measure and compare parts of a sport played on clay.
  • One category is about things used to compare objects or concepts based on their size.
  • One category is about things whose first few letters make up words used as alternatives to making fun of someone.

Yellow Answers: Revealed & Explained

SILENCE

CALM

HUSH

PEACE

STILL

This part of the puzzle was straightforward to me, as I put CALM and PEACE together right away when starting. After this, I recognized that STILL meant stillness you would find in a quiet place, linking the word to the previous two. HUSH was the only other word I could see fitting as the final one in this category, which allowed me to discover the right answer.

Green Answers: Revealed & Explained

TENNIS COMPETITION UNITS

GAME

MATCH

SET

TOURNAMENT

MATCH and TOURNAMENT are fairly easy words to put together in a category, but I spent a lot of time thinking about what other phrases worked with them. Eventually, I thought to participating in local fighting game tournaments, where a SET determines a GAME in a competition. While I didn’t know this category directly related to tennis, the fact that a GAME is determined by a SET and MATCH in that sport creates the right connection between all four words.

Blue Answers: Revealed & Explained

COMPARATIVELY SMALL

BABY

COMPACT

MINUTE

TOY

This was a tricky part of the puzzle to piece together, but I started with COMPACT to represent something made to be smaller. Through that logic, for something to be MINUTE instead of a measure of time, it had to relate to size rather than pure definitions. This helped me add TOY and BABY, which are both terms one might use to compare objects or other nouns based on their size.

Purple Answers: Revealed & Explained

STARTING WITH SYNONYMS FOR “TEASE”

KIDNEY

MOCKINGBIRD

RAZZMATAZZ

RIBBON

This was by far the hardest category for me to solve, as each of these words seems to have no real comparison to any other phrase. Originally, I thought MOCKINGBIRD could reference To Kill A Mockingbird, but not enough words stood out as part of potential book titles. The only way I was able to see the connection here was when I saw “rib” in the first part of RIBBON, and understood that “mock,” “kid,” and “razz” from the other words formed a theme of teasing.
