Mafia: The Old Country is coming out this summer, and, thanks to a new trailer, we now know more about the upcoming prequel than ever before. Mafia: The Old Country is set to be a prequel to the rest of the series, set over a century ago in the south of Italy – the old country. With an original story featuring a new cast of characters, it’s uniquely poised to breathe some new life into a series that’s been dormant for the better part of a decade, following mixed critical response to its most recent entry, Mafia 3.
In short, series fans have placed their hopes in The Old Country, which, until recently, we knew very little about. However, the release of a gameplay trailer yesterday gave us a much deeper look at its characters, features, and setting, now with a concrete release date and some extra information on its various editions. Here’s everything you need to know about Mafia: The Old Country ahead of its release this summer.
Mafia: The Old Country Release Date & Platforms
When Mafia: The Old Country Comes Out
Mafia: The Old Country is slated for release on August 8, 2025. That puts it almost nine years out from the previous mainline entry, Mafia 3, and just under five years after Mafia: Definitive Edition, the enhanced remake of the first Mafia game.

From Elden Ring: Nightreign and Dune: Awakening to the much-anticipated DOOM: The Dark Ages, there are a lot of amazing games coming out in May 2025.
Mafia: The Old Country will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S at launch. It won’t be released on previous generation consoles, like the PS4 and Xbox One, nor will it be one of the triple-A games expected to come to Switch 2 this summer – at least, not when it’s first released.
Mafia: The Old Country Price, Editions, & Preorders
How Much Does Mafia: The Old Country Cost?
Mafia: The Old Country is available for preorder now in two editions: Standard and Deluxe. Fans of the series were surprised yesterday when it was revealed that the base edition of Mafia: The Old Country would only cost $49.99 – significantly less than the generally standard $70 price tag that’s slapped on most triple-A games, which some publishers are now increasing to $80.
Mafia: The Old Country is now available for preorder on all platforms where it’ll eventually be playable. Everyone who preorders the game, regardless of edition, will receive a free digital download: the Soldato Pack. It’s a mostly cosmetic DLC, containing a set of items to change Enzo’s appearance, along with an equippable charm. We don’t know exactly what that charm will do, but it’s likely to be an optional accessory to give you a little boost in the early game.
If you want something a little snazzier, you can also preorder Mafia: The Old Country‘s Deluxe Edition, which is going for $59.99. Whether preordered or purchased at launch, the Deluxe Edition comes with a variety of digital goodies:
-
Padrino Pack
- “Lupara Speciale” shotgun
- “Vendetti Speciale” pistol
- “Immortale” charm
- “Padrino” outfit
- “Stiletto Speciale” knife
- “Eckhart Speciale” limousine
- “Cosimo” horse & accessories
-
Gatto Nero Pack
- “Bodeo Nero” pistol
- “Velocità” charm
- “Gatto Nero” outfit
- “Carozella Nero” race car
It’s likely that the special weapons, horses, and cars you get with the Digital Edition are simply visually distinct versions of items that already exist in-game – the “speciale” and “nero” attached to each of them seem to suggest that other versions exist. However, you may be able to get these unique cosmetic variants without spending any of your hard-earned in-game cash, which is a benefit in and of itself.
Finally, those who purchase the Deluxe Edition of Mafia: The Old Country will receive a digital artbook and soundtrack featuring concept art and music tracks from the game.
Theories about the low price abound: some players claim it’s because The Old Country will be a shorter game, akin to Definitive Edition with its ten-or-so-hour runtime. Others suspect it’s a bid to boost sales, as many long, high-quality games from lesser-known series or developers are now coming out at lower prices. Ultimately, we won’t know the true reason for the relatively low price until the game’s eventual release.
Mafia: The Old Country Gameplay & Story Details
What Is Mafia: The Old Country About?
Again, Mafia: The Old Country is a prequel, set amid the founding of organized crime in 1900s Sicily – think the flashback sequences from The Godfather Part 2. It’ll return players to the town of San Celeste, which was briefly featured in the introductory chapter of Mafia 2.
Players will control Enzo Favara, a young man who gets caught up in the whirlwind of organized crime working under Don Torissi. Born into a life of forced labor, Enzo sees the mafia as a way out – a social ladder he can climb to secure personal wealth and a more comfortable lifestyle. It looks to be a rags-to-riches story, for Enzo as well as the mafia; he’ll explore both Roman ruins and opulent mansions as he rises through the ranks.
Gameplay-wise, The Old Country looks to be a pretty typical Mafia game – from a third-person perspective, it’ll feature both gunplay and melee combat, with players likely able to choose between knives and shotguns during particular combat sequences. We know of at least three different weapons to appear in-game: stiletto knives, pistols, and shotguns, although more may be revealed closer to launch.

Every Character Confirmed For GTA 6
Grand Theft Auto 6 has finally released a second trailer, which introduces several new characters.
Notably, The Old Country appears to feature stealth mechanics; Enzo is seen, during the gameplay trailer, sneaking up behind his enemies and taking them out quietly. It’s unknown whether this will be a choice that’s available to players during all missions, or reserved for certain stealth-focused tasks.
Between all the fighting, players will be able to ride horses and drive classic cars around the landscape of rural Sicily. We do know that Mafia: The Old Country is set to be a lot more linear than Mafia 3, likely playing out in more structured chapters a bit more like the first two games in the series. In other words, there’s unlikely to be any kind of open-world exploration; you’ll more or less go from one mission to the next, although there may be a little opportunity for free roaming in between certain tasks.
But for now, that’s all we can say with any kind of certainty about the next Mafia game. Trailers have revealed quite a bit of its gameplay and setting, but its characters and story are still mostly under wraps. The rest will be revealed when Mafia: The Old Country is released on August 8.
