Why ‘The Voice’ Had To Bring Back Snoop Dogg Next Season

When it comes to The Voice, the show’s central appeal is the celebrity coaches. With a revolving door of famous faces lending their talents and wisdom to the next generation of artists, having the right coach can make or break your journey on the show. Last season, The Voice brought in a pair of rookie coaches to its roster: Michael Bublé and Snoop Dogg.

Though they had both served as mentors and advisors in the past, some questioned Snoop Dogg’s knowledge and ability to serve as a full-time coach. Though Michael Bublé ended up walking away victorious as a rookie, it was Snoop Dogg who became the biggest and best surprise. And the surprises will keep on coming. While he did take off for Season 27, he’ll be back for Season 28, and that sounds about right. The next chapter is here: The Doggfather returns.

‘The Voice’ Was More Than a Paycheck To Snoop Dogg

In the world of hip-hop and rap, Snoop Dogg is a legend. Rooted in West Coast hip-hop, his influence has inspired a generation, even garnering countless accolades. His resume has always served as an example as to why he would be a great mentor on the show, but the trepidation over his potential coaching ability was called into question. Not necessarily a knock against him, he was just an against-the-grain selection. But he shattered the thoughts of the naysayers.

Adam Levine smiles as he watches his team on the Playoffs on 'The Voice' Season 27.

Adam Levine Made the Wrong Choice To Strategically Win ‘The Voice’ Season 27

Two singers had to ensure Adam Levine wins Season 27 of ‘The Voice.’

Snoop Dogg’s passion, experience, and showmanship came out through his coaching, proving that he was more than capable of being a coach on The Voice. His guidance to his singers wasn’t necessarily rooted in technique and musicality; it came from a place of understanding how to own the stage, learning about the business, and guiding them through the hoops of being the best artist they could possibly be. He was engrossed. He was engaged. He was one of the most authentic coaches the show has had. Many coaches have those soundbites about how difficult it is to make the difficult decisions, but when Snoop was in the hot seat, the emotions were real. He was truly affected by having to cut someone’s hopes and dreams down. It wasn’t just a paycheck. It was more than a job. This was his calling. As someone who has helped other artists in their careers as the Doggfather of Death Row Records, he truly knows what he’s doing.

Snoop Dogg Brings a Bag of Tricks

For his run on Season 26, Snoop Dogg defied expectations, not only for his performance, but through the artists he worked with. One might think that he would lean only toward like-minded artists, but he opened his heart to an array of artistry. He championed two singers into the live shows who were not R&B singers. One, Christina Eagle, was a country singer. The other, Jeremy Beloate, was a theatrical vocalist. Despite not placing on the podium, Snoop Dogg took a risk. It was truly what his tenure was about. Even when he brought in Simone Biles as a Playoff advisor, it was a shocking decision. In what world could a decorated Olympian help singers? And that’s where his mastery came in. He knew that she could share her experience as a performer. And in the end, it was worthwhile. As a risk-taker in his career and on The Voice, it’s expected to happen again when he returns.

Snoop Dogg’s presence is a continuing breath of fresh air. He provides an understanding of his genre that some of the other coaches haven’t experienced. He understands the ins and outs of the industry. He has forged a path that has been unexpected and riveting. In what world did we expect him to build a budding friendship with Martha Stewart and become a mouthpiece for Team USA? He’s just a bag of tricks. And, when it comes to the show, just the energy and fun he brings to the show elevates The Voice to a whole other level. Even though he didn’t win Season 26, his direction and guidance for a new class of singers will most certainly help him seek redemption. He’s got the recipe; all he has to do is just execute it. Now, it’s just a matter of who will be joining him. Let’s hope it’s a mix of old and new rivals. He did have some chemistry with Reba McEntire, so hopefully they’ll become The Voice’s dynamic duo!

The Voice airs Mondays at 8:00pm on NBC. All episodes are available to stream on Peacock.
