Netflix recently released the official trailer for Wednesday season 2, and among the many hints audiences get about what the new installment will hold, there is the inclusion of a gag that originates all the way back to the 1960s Addams Family TV show. After quickly rising to fame in 2022, Wednesday became one of Netflix’s most popular and sought-after series. The latter is because it has taken three whole years to get Wednesday season 2. However, the time has finally come for the return of Wednesday and Nevermore Academy and the new season already looks great.
In just a few minutes, the Wednesday season 2 trailer offers up numerous reveals about the new episodes. Viewers see that Pugsley (who shoots a bolt of lightning out of his finger) is now attending Nevermore with Wednesday. There are also shots of Tyler locked away and the return of Uncle Fester in a bubbly bath tub. One of the most interesting details, however, is a handful of scenes that show Wednesday dining with a table full of creepy dolls. This may seem like an innocuous gag, but it actually has deep roots in the Addams Family franchise.
Wednesday Season 2’s Doll Obsession Is A Callback To The Addams Family’s Marie Antoinette Doll Gag
Why This Addams Family Callback Is So Clever
At first glance, Wednesday’s interaction with a crew of eerie dolls seems like nothing more than a random plot point for the new season. However, as it turns out, the dolls are actually a clear connection to the 1964 sitcom, The Addams Family. In that series, Wednesday had a Marie Antoinette doll that she would often play with, putting her into a guillotine. Therefore, when Wednesday says “let’s play dolls,” it is not just a funny gag, but is a twist on the younger Wednesday that appeared in the 1960s.

Knowing this, Wednesday season 2’s doll bit is really clever. The show has worked hard to make itself stand out from past Addams Family projects, yet the Wednesday still includes callbacks and references that deepen the experience for fans. Prime examples include the casting of Christina Ricci as Marilyn Thornhill and Wednesday being dressed up as a pilgrim in Wednesday season 1, episode 3. Ultimately, the doll subplot is subtle, but it continues to honor the Addams Family legacy in a fun and smart way.
Wednesday Season 2 Can Still Include Her Childhood Marie Antoinette Doll In A Flashback
Wednesday Season 2’s Dolls Are A Perfect Opportunity
In the trailer, viewers may not see Wednesday’s Marie Antoinette doll, but that doesn’t mean she won’t make an appearance in season 2. The show could easily include Antoinette in a flashback to Wednesday’s youth, as they did in Wednesday season 1 when viewers see a younger Wednesday mourning the loss of her pet scorpion, Nero. While including the Antoinette doll may be more on the nose, it would more firmly establish the link between Wednesday and The Addams Family sitcom.
The series mainly focuses on Wednesday’s time at Nevermore, but the plotlines surrounding her relationship with her family are equally important.
I think having another flashback to Wednesday’s youth would be ideal in Wednesday season 2. The series mainly focuses on Wednesday’s time at Nevermore, but the plotlines surrounding her relationship with her family are equally important. Flashbacks would allow audiences to get a better sense of how Wednesday grew up and how these bonds formed. It will be especially important if Pugsley is playing a bigger role this season. All in all, Wednesday has already set up some very interesting storylines and references that will hopefully be played up once the new season premieres.
