One of the key creatives on ABC’s The Rookie just spilled the beans on one of his favorite dynamics in the show. The Rookie will air its Season 7 finale this Tuesday, May 13, and after being on the air since the start of this year, fans have to say goodbye to Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan. Fortunately, it won’t be for too long – The Rookie has already been renewed for Season 8, and although lacking an official release date, it will likely return to ABC next year, if not sooner. The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley recently sat down for an interview with ScreenRant and revealed that the dynamic between Angela (Alyssa Diaz) and Nyla’s (Mekia Cox) mothers has been his favorite:
“I would watch that show every week. I love that dynamic. Those two actresses are brilliant and really understood the assignment. Those scenes are a joy.”
The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley got his start as a writer, penning the script for Exorcist: The Beginning, the horror film starring Stellan Skarsgård and Izabella Scorupco. It wasn’t until five years later that he got his start in TV by writing an episode of The Unusuals. Once he turned to TV, he never looked back, and things blossomed from there on his way to writing episodes of Body of Proof, State of Affairs, and The Following, the crime thriller series led by Kevin Bacon. In addition to The Rookie, Hawley is also the creator of The Recruit, the Netflix original espionage series led by Noah Centineo that was canceled after two seasons. Hawley is also famous for writing an episode of Training Day, the 2017 series based on the popular Denzel Washington movie that ran for only one season. He also worked on The Rookie spin-off, Feds, which ran for one season.
’The Rookie’s Nathan Fillion Has Two DC Projects Lined Up
It had already been confirmed that Fillion would star as Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern in Superman, but a recent development confirmed his role in another DCU project. The first official trailer for Peacemaker Season 2 was released a few days ago, and it confirmed that he will appear in the series as well. Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl will also star in Peacemaker Season 2. Fillion is a James Gunn veteran who has worked with the writer/director on several of his Guardians of the Galaxy movies in the MCU and previously on The Suicide Squad.
